In Mark 10:17-27 a wealthy man falsely presupposes that he must earn salvation which is evidenced by his question: "Good teacher, what must I do in order to inherit eternal life?" The problem this man had was that he did not know the true identity of the one to whom he was speaking. The man's failure to trust in Jesus led him to depart with a grieving heart after Jesus commanded him to sell his possessions and to follow as a disciple. Jesus points out that this kind of trust is impossible for man but is made possible by God. We can conclude from this that salvation is completely a gift from God, and that human beings can do nothing to conjure up salvation on their own.
