The Danger of Turning Back

November 24, 2013 Preacher: Bob DeWaay

Scripture: Galatians 4:8–4:11

This section of Galatians, interpreted literally, is shocking. It says that if law, even Mosaic Law, is added to the gospel, this puts those who demand law keeping under the stoicheia (the hostile spiritual powers). The sermon discusses the substance of an idol and the relationship to the demons behind the idol. Since Christians know God, or as Paul rhetorically corrects himself, are known by God, they are free from slavery to the demonic powers feared by the inhabitants of Asia Minor. To go back is to willingly return to slavery. A key issue that arises in this text is that of keeping a religious calendar. There is no binding religious calendar under the New Covenant. Days of worship are a matter of Christian liberty. We are urged to be reconciled to God through the gospel.
