Paul illustrates the new covenant realities of freedom and promise by using the Hagar and Sarah narrative from Genesis. Paul uses the term Law in two ways -- Law-works that cannot justify and Law as the Old Testament Scriptures. False teachers what to promote law in the first sense while rebelling against the Law in the second sense. Hagar/Ishmael/Sinai/present Jerusalem are not of the promise but of the flesh. Promise is associated with Sarah, Isaac and the heavenly Jerusalem. We are to resist law givers who will lead us back to bondage and away from God's promises through the gospel.
