Jesus Gives the Correct Understanding of Church and State (Mark 12:13-17)

May 18, 2014 Preacher: Eric Douma Series: Mark

Scripture: Mark 12:13–17

In Mark 12:13-17 we witness the Pharisees and Scribes attempt to put Jesus in a dilemma in order to destroy Him. They asked Jesus whether they were required morally to give a poll tax to Caesar. The question was designed to get Jesus in trouble either with the Jews who thought it was blasphemy to pay the tax or with the Romans who demanded the tax be paid. Jesus answered that they must "render to Caesar the things that are Caesars and to God the things that are God's." By this statement, Jesus taught that the Jews were obligated to pay tax to the Romans because God had ordained government, but He also showed a clear distinction between Caesar and God. We invite you to come and learn the biblical world view concerning the relationship of church and state at the feet of Jesus in this message.
