John describes important truths about being God’s beloved children. Those who truly know Christ cannot go on living in sin. John refutes antinomianism (being against law). People become children of God only through the new birth. Truly knowing Christ means being rejected by the world. Being like Christ is about the communicable attributes of God. We cannot ascend to godhood as some false teachers claim. Believing in Christ and hoping in Christ motivates present purity. We must come to the Christ of the Bible, not some man-defined Christ that offers only positive feelings.
