The type of love John describes comes only through God in Christ. We must understand what John means by love and not allow the world to define love for us. We do not deny that there is love in the world through common grace. But those born of God have a unique love that comes through God’s special work of grace in Christ. God, not man, defines what His love truly means. The coming of the Son from glory into human history and dying for the sins of those who hate God supremely demonstrates the love of God. God’s saving love is totally gracious and not given based on human merit. It pleased God to make atoning sacrifice for those who believe.
