Truth, Obedience and Love (2 John 1-6)
Preacher: Bob DeWaay Series: Epistles of John Scripture: 2 John 1:1
2 John is likely written to a local church and its members, not a particular lady and her children. In this section John emphasizes key ideas that are found in his gospel and epistles including the truth, abiding in Christ and love. John particularly emphasizes the truth. This sermon shows why and how the truth is under attack and all Christians must know and embrace the truth while rejecting falsehood. We also point out the both truth and love are necessary and we must not allow anyone to tell us to give up one or the other. John rejoices to hear that Christians walk in truth because error is so prevalent. We also need to realize the profound necessity of loving one another as Christians in the context of a sinful world that hates us. Love is not merely a feeling or emotion, but a godly, spiritual motivation that is expressed in obedient action. We end with strong gospel call to welcome the truth.
