The Eternal Purpose of God (Ephesians 3:10-11)

March 31, 2019 Preacher: Bob DeWaay Series: Ephesians

Scripture: Ephesians 3:10-11

This sermon explores what God has now revealed about His eternal purpose and how the church makes it known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realm. This purpose is God's wisdom now revealed. It is called "many-faceted" which emphasizes its depth and profundity. Earlier Paul prayed that the church would be enlightened about this.

The sermon emphasizes that God has chosen to reveal these things and we must not allow human sentimentality or sensibilities limit what we are willing to believe about God and His purposes. If God had not chosen to reveal his manifold wisdom, no one would know it.

We explain that the one who reveals is God and the church is how God has made this known to the hostile powers in the heavenlies. This does not mean that we preach to these beings, but that the very existence of the church as "one new man" consisting of redeemed Jews and Gentiles makes the church the intermediate agent of this revelation to the spiritual powers. These beings are real as we show in Daniel 10:13, but it is not our job to interact with them. God is over the rulers and authorities and we can go directly to God because He hears us and our appeals.

We also discuss the truth that God acts with purpose and His divine attributes insure that His purpose will come to pass. Isaiah 46:10 clearly shows this. We have pertinent applications from Ephesians 6 and the book of Jude.
