Truth, Love and Spiritual Growth (Ephesians 4:15-16)
September 29, 2019 Preacher: Bob DeWaay Series: Ephesians
Scripture: Ephesians 4:15-16
In this section Paul gives the alternative to the winds of doctrines he warned about in the previous verse. We are to speak the truth in love and grow up in Christ, the head. Truth is what we have to combat the deceit, error and schemes that buffet the church. This sermon emphasizes mutual love and support in the body of Christ. This means that every member is important and should be spoken to in love. The body has an organic unity that means the Christ is working through each member. We thereby grow and mature. This means that being built on the rock, we are stable. Paul uses metaphors from biology and building to make this point. God fits every member together as each member receives nourishment from Christ. We show various passages from Ephesians and elsewhere in the NT that reinforce the importance of fellowship in the body of Christ. Christ did not intend for His people to live in solitude and avoid contact with one another. Mutual love is expressed as we care for each other and look after the well-being of everyone God saves.
