1 Corinthians 1:18-19 “One True Message—Two Destinies”

This sermon begins by reviewing verse 17 which speaks of “wisdom of word” which is translated “clever speech, eloquent wisdom” and other ways. Paul’s preaching of the gospel was not to impress people with his eloquence, but to speak the truth about the only way of salvation. When “wisdom of word” is contrasted with “word of the cross” the difference is profound. The “word of the cross” is a synedoche for the whole of the person and work of Christ that is the only way of salvation. The eloquence of speech prized by the world does not need to be true, only persuasive. The preaching of the gospel is the truth. The truth does not change depending on the response of various audiences.

The gospel is the only way that God’s wrath against sin can be averted. Paul uses a Greek word for “foolishness” that is the source for our word “moronic.” Verse 18 says that those who are perishing consider the gospel “foolishness” while it is the very power of God to those who are being saved. These are the two destinies. The gospel is the one true message that will save.
