Wisdom of This Age Is Doomed: 1 Corinthians 2:6

October 10, 2021 Preacher: Bob DeWaay Series: 1 Corinthians

Scripture: 1 Corinthians 2:6

Title:   1 Corinthians 2:6 “Wisdom of This Age is Doomed”

By Bob DeWaay

The wisdom which Paul preached is “Christ crucified,” the true wisdom that is not of this age. Neither Jews nor Greeks were looking for a crucified, Jewish Messiah. Previous passages in 1 Corinthians have shown this and are reviewed in this sermon. 1 Corinthians 2:6 also speaks of the “mature.” This is a reference to all Christians, not just certain elite ones. Pertinent passages from 1 Corinthians and elsewhere are given as evidence for this interpretation. When Paul mentions “this age,” he speaks of the present age of evil and deception that is facing judgment. The “wisdom of this age” is foolishness because it rejects God’s revealed wisdom which is “Christ crucified.” The evil rulers of this age are human rulers and the spiritual powers of darkness which are in the heavenly places. They are “coming to nothing” because they face God’s judgment. In application, we warn against self-deception that leads to pride and a false “wisdom” that is not from God. Any so-called “wisdom” that has nothing to do with Christ crucified, repentance and forgiveness of sins will ultimately come under judgment. The sermon ends with a call to reject pagan idolatry and turn to God through Christ (1 Thessalonians 1:9, 10).
