Build in Light of the Day of the Lord: 1 Corinthians 3:12-15

May 29, 2022 Preacher: Bob DeWaay Series: 1 Corinthians

Scripture: 1 Corinthians 3:12-15

“Building in Light of The Day of the Lord” by Bob DeWaay

In this section, Paul continues the theme of building with care on the one foundation—Jesus Christ. This section explains that the coming Day (the day of the Lord) will test the work of each one. We make it clear that this is about workers who have the right foundation. This continues Paul’s concern about various schisms and strife that existed in Corinth. Christian preachers and other workers may think they are doing the best job compared to other workers, but we cannot make such judgments now. The examination comes when the Lord tests the work of each one in ‘the Day.” The use of various building materials likely alludes to Solomon’s temple but should not be considered an allegory. This is about what will be non-combustible or will burn up. This does not imply loss of salvation, but loss of reward. What we know is that we need to preach Christ and clearly teach the Word of God. In God will deal with “each one” individually and appraise the work. This does not happen during the church age, but when Christ comes and brings judgment.

We warn against allowing popularity with our peers among various Christian groups to decide what is important. Doing so can easily lead to pride and cause us to make wrong judgments. All of the applications are taken from Philippians 1:12-18 in which Paul cites people who preach Christ from wrong motives, but he does rejoice that Christ is preached. We end with the gospel and a call to believe in Christ for salvation.
