Jesus’ Followers Must Hate Divorce: Matthew 5:31-32
July 17, 2022 Preacher: Eric Douma Series: Matthew
Scripture: Matthew 5:31-32
In this message taken from Matthew 5:31-32 we learn that believers in Christ should develop a hatred of divorce in order that we don’t succumb to it in our own marriages. We begin this message by explaining the debate surrounding Deuteronomy 24:1-4 that was ongoing in Jesus’ day. Many Israelites falsely believed that the “certificate of divorce” referred to by Moses was an indication that God allowed divorce. We learn from Jesus that Deuteronomy 24 didn’t indicate God’s approval of divorce, but God’s desire to limit the damage caused by divorce. Come and hear for yourself how God desires marriages to preserve the “one flesh” union that is established in His sight.
