The Lord’s Supper: Remembrance, Proclamation & Hope: 1 Corinthians 11:23-26

January 29, 2023 Preacher: Bob DeWaay Series: 1 Corinthians

Scripture: 1 Corinthians 11:23-26

This sermon unpacks the verses usually cited as the words of institution for those who receive communion. We explain three truths that are revealed in the verses in 1 Corinthians l1:23-26: remembrance, proclamation, and hope. The remembrance part goes back to the Lord’s words at the Last Supper and His command to “do this in remembrance of Me” (Luke 22:19). The Passover which the Lord kept with His disciples is grounded in God’s mighty deeds which reveal His redemptive purposes. We cite Exodus 12:11-14 where God promised “when I see the blood I will pass over you.” This prefigures the greater work of redemption done by Christ, once for all. The new covenant is ratified by the blood of the sinless savior. This we remember as the ground of our identity as part of the family of God. The proclamation is the public statement that we are trusting in Christ alone and we are His people because of His gracious work, not our merit. We have true fellowship with God and one another. The hope is expressed in the statement, “you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.” We believe His promise that we will partake in the future Messianic banquet with all the saints when the Lord returns. Christians have eternal hope grounded in God’s promises.
