Light, Darkness and God's Judgment: John 3:17-21

May 28, 2023 Preacher: Bob DeWaay Series: John

Scripture: John 3:17-21

The famous verse—John 3:16, spoke of God’s love for the world and the danger of perishing. Those who believe in the ‘one and only Son’ will not perish. Verses 17 and 18 of John 3 reveal that the world (cosmos) is already under universal sin and judgment and the Son came to bring salvation through faith in Him, which is the only way out. One must fully trust the Son to find salvation and escape from judgment

John uses the themes of spiritual darkness and the Light. In John, ‘the Light’ is a reference to Christ. The shocking irony, which John calls “the verdict,” is that humans loved darkness rather than light because of their evil practices.  We present a strong call for people to turn to Christ and trust Him since all who do not believe in the Son remain in darkness and face judgment. We also point out that false doctrine about Christ which leaves out some of the essential attributes such as eternal non-contingent existence will not bring anyone out of darkness. Some false teachers speak of Christ and Light but are in reality deceived. Those who trust the Son have eternal life.
