These verses are very familiar to most Christians. Sadly the profundity of them is often missed because of familiarity and rote repetition.
In this sermon we dig into the context in Corinthians as well as important related passages in Luke, Exodus and others. The Lord’s Supper is grounded in the Last Supper which is a Passover meal with Jesus and His disciples.
We point out that the problems in Corinth had to do with status rivalry and some people thinking they could shame others who seemed less important. The very nature of the Lord’s Supper is that no one is worthy of dining with the Lord other than by His work of grace.
We show that we remember what the Lord has done for us, proclaim the basis for our right standing in His flock, and rejoice in the hope of the future Messianic banquet. We also show that being adopted sons and daughters in His family makes us one. This unity is grounded in God’s eternal purposes as shown is Ephesians 1.
