The Trial, Crucifixion, Burial and Resurrection of Christ: Luke 22:66-24:27

April 20, 2025 Preacher: Bob DeWaay Series: Resurrection

Scripture: Luke 22:66– 24:27

This sermon is a narrated reading of the events that lead up to Christ’s crucifixion, His death on a cross, His burial and His resurrection. The key points from each section are explained in context with serious consideration of Luke’s narrative purpose.

Jesus was on a trip to Jerusalem to suffer, be rejected, killed, and raised from the dead on the third day (Luke 9:22). After citing the previews in Luke 9, we read the verses on the various court proceedings before the Sanhedrin, Pilate, Herod, and Pilate again.

They did not find guilt in Jesus, but the angry mob demanded that Jesus be crucified. Pilate finally handed Jesus over. After reading the text from Scripture we have comments about the significance of each scene as the events unfold. Special attention is paid to the criminal on the cross who repented.

It is thematic in Luke-Acts that sinners who repent find forgiveness, eternal life and a place in the future Kingdom. We also see how women are key people in this section who mourn for Jesus, take action at the tomb, and are informed by an angel that Jesus was raised. Many OT Scriptures are fulfilled.
