The Prophetic Calling of Every Believer

Preacher: Bob DeWaay Series: Topical Topic: Faith Scripture: 1 Corinthians 14:29–31

This is a topical sermon about the importance of prophecy in the church according to Biblical standards and definitions. This topic is grounded in the series we preached on 1 Corinthians 14 where Paul defines prophecy in the church.

Those who prophesy speak to men for edification, exhortation and comfort (1 Corin. 14:3). Each one may prophesy in an orderly manner (1 Corin. 14:31). We cite many other scriptures which define such prophecy and also point to the fulfillment of Joel 2:28 in Acts 2.

Prophecy is bringing out valid implications and applications of Scriptures including Messianic salvation and the use of the keys of the kingdom. These keys are pronouncing the terms of entrance through faith in Christ’s finished work on the cross.

We also cite Luther on this topic in his dispute with Rome. The Roman Catholic hierarchy kept the right of the use of the keys to herself and also silenced the church. Gospel preaching is one of the most important aspects of prophecy in the church.

Prophecy must be judged and the key means of judgment is the testimony of Christ. The Holy Spirit speaks of Christ. Anyone with a false doctrine of Christ is a false prophet.
