God Has Spoken In His Son

Preacher: Bob DeWaay Series: Hebrews Scripture: Hebrews 1:1–2

As we begin Hebrews, we examine the issues of authorship and date since both have been discussed in church history. The author of Hebrews purposely remains unknown but there are clues in the text. He is associated with Timothy and associated with those who personally were taught by Christ (‘confirmed to us by those who heard’—2:13).

His eloquence in the Greek language has caused many to believe Apollos was the author but we cannot be sure. We discuss this possibility and possible evidence that points to Apollos. Since there was still a sacrificial system about which to warn people against, it is reasonable to assume a date before 70 AD.  This sermon expounds the first two verses of Hebrews 1 which emphasize, “God has spoken.”

Verse 1 has 5 Greek words which begin with p (pi) which also have assonance in their vowel sounds. They speak about the various ways God spoke to the fathers in the OT. We also expound verse 2 which speaks of God’s Son who is heir of all things and the One through whom the world (lit. ages) were created. We also explain the “last days” as identified in Hebrews 1:2.

This material is powerful and profound in its description of the supremacy of Christ.
