Apostasy in the Wilderness Part 1 (Acts 7:39-43)

March 6, 2016 Speaker: Bob DeWaay Series: Acts of the Apostles

Scripture: Acts 7:39-43

The term “thrust aside” in Acts 7:39 is the same as in Acts 7:27. This repetition emphasizes that Israel rejected Moses and sets up Stephen’s claim that now they have likewise rejected Jesus. Apostasy starts in the heart and involves turning away from God. The terminology used here suggests an ironic “reverse conversion.” A key idea revealed in this section is the Hebraic concept of corporate solidarity. Stephen presents a clear Moses/Christ analogy. Are we going to believe in Jesus who we do not see, or be like ancient Israel at Sinai who demanded the tangible golden calf?
