Third Commandment: Do Not Take the Lord’s Name in Vain
April 17, 2016 Speaker: Bob DeWaay Series: The Ten Commandments
Scripture: Exodus 20:7
This sermon was originally preached on January 4, 2009
Yahweh’s name speaks of His person, nature and mighty deeds. To “take” His name means to “carry” or “lift up.” God’s people are to “carry” the name and thus show what Yahweh is like to the whole world. If those who thus “carry” His name live wicked lives, they denigrate the “Name” and thus take it to be worthless or empty. The key point in this commandment is not speech (though there are applications to this) but how those who bear the name live out their lives as Yahweh’s special people. We need grace from God to bear it in a way that brings glory and honor to His holy name.
