When Stephen sees Jesus standing this signifies both judgment and legal advocacy. In this context we discuss the meaning of the phrase “Son of Man” as applied to Christ. The story of Stephen is portrayed as a mob action because they did not follow the pattern for execution prescribed in Mishnah. We discuss the important difference between mob rule and western civilization’s principle of the rule of law. We are encouraged to reject the mob and speak the truth in love. As Stephen dies, Saul is mentioned to foreshadow what is about to happen in following chapters of Acts.
