We listen to part of a lecture by Bob DeWaay about the Emergent church and the theology of its primary teachers. Bob unpacks their seemingly mysterious theology and shows that the key idea is their eschatology. Their claim is that the world is going to evolve spiritual and socially into a future paradise without any future cataclysmic judgment such as described in the Bible. They say that they are “missional” and that means taking action to make the world a better place. Christian doctrines such the substitutionary atonement are rejected. Today their ideas are called “progressive.” We have a discussion about this after the lecture.
