Antioch and God’s Providence (Acts 11:24-30)

July 1, 2018 Speaker: Bob DeWaay Series: Acts of the Apostles

Scripture: Acts 11:24-30

ClAntioch becomes a key place where in God’s providence the gospel will penetrate the Roman Empire. God used Barnabas to help by bringing Paul there. We can be assured that if we know the Lord and are willing to serve God will use us as well. We do not need man-made programs or human wisdom to determine what our gifts are. God providentially uses us as He brings us to the right place and opportunity to serve. We discuss the serious problems in the contemporary church caused by trying to make a self-perpetuating program out of whatever may seem like a good idea at the time. Eventually these programs end up serving other purposes than bringing the light of the gospel to bear on people’s lives. Caring for churches and their people as happened in Acts does not imply creating permanent programs that have to be perpetuated long after the death of those who created them. This usually leads to liberalism and false teaching. Even prayer which we know is Biblical can be turned into a man-centered pietistic program. The Roman Catholic religion has done that to just about everything and thus making a religion of works. True change into the image of Christ is gospel centered and always by God’s grace through His ordained means.
