The Gospel Spreads (Acts 13:49-51 )

June 30, 2019 Speaker: Bob DeWaay Series: Acts of the Apostles

Scripture: Acts 13:49-51

At the conclusion of the narrative about Paul’s preaching in Pisidian Antioch Luke tells how Christians spread the gospel through the region. We discuss how this is thematic in Luke/Acts and was in keeping with the great commission in Luke 24:47 and Christ’s prediction in Acts 1:8. The spread of the word of God is mentioned many times in Acts. We discuss how repentance for forgiveness of sins is integral to gospel preaching.

The responses to such preaching vary in Acts from a positive response, little response, to open hostility. Luke emphasizes Jewish rejection, but not to the exclusion of similar rejection by Gentiles. There are some who do believe as repentance was “granted.” We discuss the reality of human responsibility to repent and the grace of God that causes repentance. Those who repent do so because of God’s grace alone and those who do not repent refuse to listen to the command to do so. Human inability does not imply lack of moral accountability. We end with a discussion of some of the foolish ideas that are promoted by the emergent church.
