Paul's Ministry in Ephesus

May 6, 2022 Speaker: Bob DeWaay Series: Acts of the Apostles

Scripture: Acts 19:10-12

This class focuses on the importance of authorial intent when studying and interpreting the Scriptures. Luke’s use of previews and reviews in his Spirit-inspired two volume work (Luke-Acts) help us see the fulfillment of God’s purposes through Christ and His apostles. Paul’s ministry in Ephesus is part of the purpose of God in bringing Messianic salvation to the ends of the earth (Acts 1:8). Various erroneous interpretations of Acts in church history distort Luke’s meaning by failing to take into account his use of repeated themes and terms. False claims are based on contrived readings that cannot be sustained under careful scrutiny. We cite examples from passages where God’s mighty works through Paul echo previous supernatural deeds done through Christ Himself (Luke 6:17-18). Similar works of power happened through Peter and other apostles (Acts 5:12-16). In our day, many false apostles and prophets claim to do such works but are in fact not able to. They deceive their followers by denying the uniqueness and purpose of what God did through His true apostles. We show various times how Luke stresses the mighty power of God which cannot be duplicated those who are false and not from God. If we learn how to carefully read the Holy Spirit-inspired text, God will use that to change the lives of believers and keep us safe from false teachers.
