Naomi begins her return to Judah with her two Moabite daughters-in-law, Orpah and Ruth.

She exhorts them to return to Moab and to find rest there apart from her. Consequently, Orpah returns to her people and gods, while Ruth forsakes her people for the God and people of Israel.
