Festus Hands Paul's Case to Agrippa

Speaker: Bob DeWaay Series: Acts of the Apostles Scripture: Acts 25:13–25:27, Acts 26:1–26:11

As we study Luke’s account of the Paul’s trial before King Agrippa II, we emphasize the historicity of the events in Acts 25. The terminology used by Luke is in keeping with the details of the Roman rule of the Judean part of the Roman empire.

Places titles, procedures, and technical legal terminology are accurate. Luke is a serious historian with great writing skills. We also show how the interaction between the Roman authorities and Jewish leadership is in keeping with the key issues.

Festus introduces Agrippa to what has happened and why the trial is being held in Caesaria. The Jewish leadership’s hatred toward Paul was spiritual and theological, not prompted by Paul breaking any civil laws.

Paul’s main claim was that Jesus Christ had been crucified and then rose from the dead. Fetus says as much to Agrippa. We also discus God’s providence as well as special revelation from Jesus Christ Himself who had appeared to Paul more than once.

Various passages earlier in Luke/Acts set the stage for this part of the church’s witness to the remotest part of the earth, starting in Jerusalem (Acts 1:8).
