Paul Testifies Before Agrippa (Pt 1)
Speaker: Bob DeWaay Series: Acts of the Apostles Scripture: Acts 26:1–26:8
Paul’s opportunity to testify in his own defense is the result of God’s providence which brought him safely to this point despite many plots to kill him. We study the background of Agrippa II who was in authority for many years in this part of the Roman empire.
His reign went years past the destruction of Jerusalem in 70AD. Ironically, the charges brought against Paul by the Jews were that he was an enemy of Moses and had defiled the temple. These were false charges.
Agrippa was well versed in Judaism and had his own interest in what Paul had to say. We spend significant time showing how Paul’s testimony fit into the larger picture of the narrative unity of Luke/Acts.
We read and discuss Paul’s past as a Pharisee and how many of those who were now his accusers had known Paul when he was Saul who persecuted Christians. Their hatred of him is likely due to viewing him as a traitor to their cause. Paul cited the hope of the resurrection of the dead in his address (Acts 26:6-8).
We cite various passages in Acts where other preachers emphasize the resurrection of Christ. We also discuss how God sent Ananias to pray for Paul with the knowledge that Paul would testify before kings (Acts 9:15-16). Every sermon in Acts mentions the resurrection.
