Paul Testifies Before Agrippa II (Pt 2)

Speaker: Bob DeWaay Series: Acts of the Apostles Scripture: Acts 26:9–26:20

In this portion of Paul’s testimony to Agrippa, Paul testifies concerning the details of his conversion. We cite many facts about Agrippa II and his place in Jewish history, including that he reigned in that part of the world all the way to 93 AD. He was king during the time when the temple was destroyed in 70 AD.

His interactions with Jewish history are extensive. At this hearing Paul was able to share freely about his conversion from Judaism to Christ. Saul had been violently opposed to Christianity and the Gospel. Jesus confronted Saul and called Saul’s attacks persecution against Christ Himself.

This leads us to a discussion about corporate solidarity in Biblical thinking. Jesus told Paul that he was to testify about things he saw and would see. We examine the word horaoo_ which is Greek for see as a verb. It is used also in 1 Corinthians 15 for qualifications for apostles, they had seen (horaoo_) the Lord.

The Lord also appointed Paul (Acts 26:16). Paul’s conversion leads us to a discussion about the nature of conversion and the issue of monergism versus synergism. Paul’s conversion was clearly a work of God alone. Paul was fully hostile to Christ and the gospel before God’s work of grace to convert him.
