Paul Testifies Before Agrippa II (Pt 3)
Speaker: Bob DeWaay Series: Acts of the Apostles Scripture: Acts 26:17–26:26
As Paul continues his testimony to King Agrippa, he speaks of Jesus’ words to him at his conversion which included significant, theological detail. Paul is called to bring the light of the gospel to bear on the darkness which has blinded Jews and Gentiles from the truth. The call of the gospel is to turn to God from Satan.
Paul speaks to Agrippa about the universal bondage of humans to Satan which implies being under the authority of Satan. All who are ‘in Adam’ are born alienated from God and under bondage to Satan. Jesus called Paul to open the eyes of his hearers to the need to repent and be sanctified by faith in Christ.
We discuss how Luke uses different occasions in Paul’s ministry to reveal different aspects of his testimony about conversion. Here in speaking to Agrippa Paul uses the terms “turn” and “repent” in a synonymously parallel way. Clearly those who teach that Paul’s gospel did not include repentance have not taken this important material into consideration.
We comment on how Paul taught significant theological details to a mixed audience which included a Roman King. How much more should theological truth be taught to Christians at their gatherings! Paul’s obedience to Christ caused the hostility of the Jewish leadership in Jerusalem against him. He would not be deterred from his calling!
