''The sixth day'': The Land Animals and Man

May 28, 2014 Speaker: Series: Genesis

Scripture: Genesis 1:24-31

On the 6th day, God finishes populating his creation with the creation of beasts and man. He completes his perfect work of creation by making man (both male and female) "in his image, after his likeness" (ESV); by setting them over the rest of the creatures on the earth; by assuring their fruitfulness, multiplication, and dominion through his divine blessing; and finally by providing them and all living creatures with vegetation for food. God is shown to be the infinitely wise, good, sovereign Creator, not only of the Israelites but also humanity and all of creation.

In our discussion, we briefly cover the creation of the land animals before dealing with two major issues. The first concerns the referent(s) in the sentences "Let us make man in our image after our likeness" and "So God created man in his own image. In the image of God he created them. Male and female he created them." (Gen 1:26f). The question is whom is God addressing when he says, "Let us make man in our image " " and, by implication, who created man, and in whose image were they made? The second issue concerns the meaning and significance of God creating man "in [his] own image" (Gen 1:27). We left some loose ends for day 6 this week, so, Lord willing, we will try to tie them up next week!
