An Overview of the Creation Account: The Meanings of the Hebrew Word yom ("day")

March 29, 2017 Speaker:

In languages, almost all words have a conventionally established range of meanings (or ideas/conceptions) that they can refer to in different communicative contexts. This is likewise true for the Hebrew word yom ("day"). That, however, does not imply that readers can just pick and choose whatever meanings suit their fancy. Did the one, true, living, creator God create all things in six light-and-darkness, day-and-night, evening-and-morning days or in six indefinite periods of time? We address this topic and also briefly touch on the significance of God's seventh day of rest and its relation to his institution of the Sabbath on Mt. Sinai. These topics will be addressed more thoroughly in another class, Lord willing.
