Ministers as Faithful Stewards: 1 Corinthians 4:1-2

August 21, 2022 Preacher: Bob DeWaay Series: 1 Corinthians

Scripture: 1 Corinthians 4:1-2

In contrast to boasting in human leaders (1 Corinthians 3:21-23), Paul tells us to think of ministers as servants under Christ. In this sermon we show how such terminology is found Luke-Acts describing those who were witnesses of Christ and “servants of the word.” Christ Himself, who appointed these servants, can and will judge the relative value of their service. Paul also uses a word which can be translated stewards or managers to describe how we should understand those who preach the gospel and care for the flock. The terminology is that of household or estate managers. Paul uses the phrase, “managers of the mysteries of God.” We show how mystery as used in this context is not a secret to used to deceive people in mystery religions for a price, but that which would not be know had God not chosen to reveal it. The mystery of God in this context is the gospel itself—Christ crucified. The Christian gospel is revealed, not concealed. It is mostly rejected because it offends Jews and seems foolish to Gentiles. Proclaiming Christ is not a career builder for religious professionals. It is a solemn duty for those who are called. The key job requirement is faithfulness. When Christ returns He will judge the faithfulness of those appointed to the job.
