True and False Knowledge of God Reject Elitism: 1 Corinthians 8:1-3
August 6, 2023 Preacher: Bob DeWaay Series: 1 Corinthians
Scripture: 1 Corinthians 8:1-3
Chapter 8 of 1 Corinthians begins in the same manner as chapter 7—citing a Corinthian slogan. This time it is “all of us posses knowledge.” As with other slogans in this book, they misuse an idea that in the proper sense could be true.
The topic to which they apply their special knowledge is food offered to idols which will be the main issue in chapters 8-10 of 1 Corinthians. Paul tells them that their “knowledge” puffs up in contrast to love which builds up.
In this sermon we explain the damage that being inflated with pride while showing the alternative which is mutual care for others in the body of Christ. Another important term in these verses is “imagines” which is found in verse 3. Some “imagine” they know something others do not and thereby reveal their lack of the knowledge which is truly necessary.
Ironically, the knowledge Paul affirms is to be “known by God.” Those who have been changed by God’s saving grace have a relationship with God which is characterized by love which comes from God. We love Him because He first loved us.
In our applications we look at important texts in Jeremiah and elsewhere which reveal the need for humility and gratitude for God having made us a people.
