Fellowship With God or Demons? 1 Corinthians 10:15-20

February 4, 2024 Preacher: Bob DeWaay Series: 1 Corinthians

Scripture: 1 Corinthians 10:15-20

We begin with an explanation why reason, making judgments based on objective facts, and Biblical discernment are the means of overcoming temptation. The common inclination to rely on feelings, romantic idealism, metaphysical impressions, or religious traditions to avoid moral failure is false.

Paul appeals to the Corinthians as “sensible people,” to make sound judgments based on what he is teaching. We correct a common misunderstanding about blessing associated with the cup and the bread of the Lord’s Supper. It is not objects such as a cup with wine in it or bread which are blessed, but we bless God who is the giver of the bread and the cup.

We cite key Biblical passages where the speaker (such as David) declares Yahweh to be blessed due to his gracious nature and mighty deeds. One such passage is 1 Chronicles 29:10-13 which shows a key declaration of God’s person, promises, and mighty deeds.

Paul speaks of covenant participation which we share with the Lord and one another at His supper. We are a redeemed community in fellowship with the Lord who redeemed us. One Greek word which is emphasized in this section is koino_nia which is translated “sharers” or “partnership” depending on the translation. Much of this section of 1 Corinthians 10 is based on allusions to Deuteronomy.

We cite a number of passages from Deuteronomy 32 which apply. The most important one is Deuteronomy 32:17 which speaks of those who rebelled against God and worshiped “demons who were not God.” This means they were a crooked generation.

We point out that this warning applies today as many “prayer techniques” have become popular but are designed to enter the spirit world rather than addressing God using the means He has ordained. The dangers are real today as they were when Paul addressed the Corinthian church in the midst of pagan temples and false deities.
