God Will Build Up His Church: Acts 20:31-34

November 19, 2023 Speaker: Bob DeWaay Series: Acts of the Apostles

Scripture: Acts 20:31-34

Paul’s address to the Ephesian Elders is a key discourse in Acts. He wars “be on the alert. “ All churches face dangers as did the one at Ephesus. The same Greek word is used in eschatological contexts in the gospels concerning the attitudes necessary for those who would be ready when the Lord returns.

Paul had spent three years admonishing each one with tender concern (tears). What we emphasize in our discussion is that Paul commended them to “God and the word of His grace” as he was leaving there for good. We point out that later in church history; institutions were created which were to keep churches alive, faithful, and true to the faith.

The opposite happens as the man-made institutions called “church” end up having a life of their own and self-perpetuate through descendants and influential people which are products of the institution. In Paul’s case, the word of God’s grace in the lives of these elders would keep them if they kept on guard as instructed. God keeps His own as they trust Him in all things and are vitally connected to the head of the church, Jesus Christ.

The simple reality of gospel fellowship is far more profound and powerful than any religious institution called “church.” We have a robust discussion about whether institutional Christianity is what God ordained. Israel was indeed an institution formed by God.

Israel will not be right with God until the millennium. Christian institutions arise because of the false teaching that the church replaces Israel and is to be an institution. I argue that the church is an organism that is alive because of its vital relationship to the Lord Jesus Christ. People are added one at a time through conversion.
